
A student nurse in Enugu State has been suspended indefinitely after posting a viral video highlighting severe deficiencies at Uwani General Hospital, sparking public outrage and debate.
The controversy began in late March 2026 when the nurse shared footage revealing troubling conditions inside the state-owned facility. In the video, healthcare workers described operating without electricity, running water, or essential medical supplies such as oxygen—even while attending to a woman in labour. The situation was widely condemned, with some staff reportedly referring to the hospital as unsafe for patients.

Following the video’s circulation on social media, the nurse released another emotional clip confirming that she had been removed from her clinical duties as punishment for speaking out. She questioned the decision, stating that her intention was to draw attention to critical issues affecting patient care.
Initially, the Enugu State Government responded by investigating the claims and reportedly addressing some of the infrastructure problems raised. However, criticism has since shifted toward the treatment of the nurse, with many accusing authorities of targeting a whistleblower rather than addressing systemic failures.
Hospital management has maintained that the issues identified in the video have been resolved, but the nurse has not been reinstated. Advocacy groups and members of the public have condemned the suspension, calling it an example of retaliation against those who expose institutional shortcomings.
The situation has placed Governor Peter Mbah under increasing scrutiny, with calls for him to intervene and ensure fair treatment for the nurse. Critics argue that instead of punishment, the whistleblower should be protected for bringing attention to conditions that may have endangered lives.
