Aliko Dangote has unveiled a massive N100 billion yearly education support programme aimed at expanding access to high er learning for Nigerian students.
Speaking at the launch of the national scholarship scheme in Lagos on Thursday, the chairman of the Dangote Group said too many brilliant young Nigerians are forced out of school due to financial constraints. He described education as the “strongest engine of social mobility” and a critical foundation for national development.
The scholarship initiative—funded by the Aliko Dangote Foundation—is projected to cost over N1 trillion across 10 years, beginning in 2026.
According to Dangote, the programme will support 45,000 new scholars annually at the start, rising to 155,000 beneficiaries by its fourth year, and sustaining that number for the rest of the decade. By 2036, a total of 1,325,000 students are expected to have benefitted.
A major component of the scheme is The Aliko Dangote STEM Scholars, targeted at 30,000 undergraduate students each year across public universities and polytechnics
. Beneficiaries will receive tuition support based on their institution’s fees and programme requirements.
“STEM drives development. If Nigeria must compete globally, our young minds must have the tools to learn, imagine and innovate,” Dangote said.
He added that the initiative aims to keep financially vulnerable students in school and broaden access to quality higher education nationwide.
