The Rivers State Police Command has arrested a 31-year-old man, Kelechi Wufurum, for allegedly murdering a commercial bus driver, Ifeanyi Abobo, in Ubima, Ikwerre Local Government Area.
According to police spokesperson Grace Iringe-Koko, the 51-year-old victim was lured under the pretense of a transport job, unaware of Wufurum’s deadly plan.
The suspect reportedly attacked Abobo near a forest, using a cutlass to strike him on the head. After the victim collapsed, Wufurum allegedly stole his minibus and mobile phone, later selling them for N2.4 million.
“When the report reached the command, the Police Special Operations and Intelligence Team quickly launched a discreet investigation, which led to the arrest of the suspect,” Iringe-Koko said.

Wufurum reportedly confessed to the crime, explaining how he overpowered the driver:
“I negotiated with a bus driver that we would go to work. When we got to the location, I used a stick to hit him to prevent him from attacking me. When he picked up another stick, I hit him and took his vehicle.”
The suspect’s cousin, Azubuike Oyemechi, and the buyer of the minibus, Ugo Ikenna, have provided accounts of their involvement to the police.
Investigations are ongoing as authorities work to bring all parties involved to justice.
