An Indian court in Ahmedabad has sentenced Christian Arinze, a Nigerian national, to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment for trafficking illegal drugs into India.
His Zambian accomplice, Hanchabila John, received the same sentence, along with a fine of Rs 200,000 each.
The case unfolded on September 3, 2021, when John was intercepted at Ahmedabad Airport.
He had arrived on a flight from Dubai, and during a routine search by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), officers discovered about 2.75 kilograms of heroin hidden in his luggage.
Subsequent investigations linked Arinze to the operation.
The Special Court for Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances ruled that the severity of the offense warranted long-term imprisonment and a significant fine.
In a social media post, the NCB urged citizens to report narcotics-related activities via the MANAS helpline, assuring that informants’ identities would remain confidential.
Arinze’s conviction comes amid a wave of heightened scrutiny of Nigerians abroad.
