Nigerian Army Frees Kidnapped Reverend in Enugu Operation

Troops of the Nigerian Army have successfully rescued a clergyman, Reverend Johnson Onugwu, who was abducted by gunmen in Enugu State, following a swift, intelligence-led operation.


The rescue was carried out by soldiers of the 82 Division under the Joint Task Force South East, Operation.

Reverend Onugwu was reportedly kidnapped from his residence in Ezimo Community, Udenu Local Government Area, in the early hours of Thursday, January 29, 2026.


Acting on credible intelligence, the troops tracked the kidnappers to the Itabolo general area before engaging them at Okpakeke Community.

A brief gun battle ensued, during which one of the suspects was neutralised, leading to the successful rescue of the clergyman without injuries.


During the operation, security forces recovered an AK-47 rifle, two magazines, and twenty rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition.


The Nigerian Army reaffirmed its commitment to working with other security agencies to safeguard lives and property, vowing to continue offensive operations against criminal elements across the region.
