The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has clarified recent public confusion over the distribution of electricity meters, stressing that not all meters are provided for free.
The clarification comes amid widespread discussions on social media and news platforms, following reports suggesting that every household would receive a free meter.
According to NERC, while the government has subsidized the cost of meters in certain programs, some consumers are still required to pay for meter installation or replacement depending on their category and location.

The commission urged electricity distribution companies (DisCos) to provide accurate information to customers and discouraged false claims that all meters are free.
NERC also reassured electricity users that ongoing efforts aim to ensure metering for all, but emphasized that blanket promises of free meters for everyone are incorrect.
The commission advised consumers to verify meter-related announcements with their local DisCos to avoid misinformation.
