Tension gripped parts of Akwa Ibom State after a shocking discovery followed a confrontation between Nigerian Army operatives and suspected criminal elements in Ikot Abasi Local Government Area.
A yet-to-be-identified corpse was found alongside a coffin shortly after troops of the 2 Brigade, Nigerian Army, dispersed a violent crowd attempting to obstruct an ongoing operation.
According to a statement issued on Sunday by the Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, Captain Lawal Muhammad, the incident stemmed from a targeted operation based on credible intelligence about criminal activities in the area.
The troops had earlier arrested a driver accused of siphoning diesel from heavy-duty equipment belonging to Sterling Petroleum and Fertiliser Limited at Ukpe Ete.
However, while transporting the suspect and the recovered product for further interrogation, a group of youths reportedly barricaded the road.
The situation quickly escalated as the mob began pelting stones and bottles at the troops in a bid to forcefully free the suspect.

“In the course of the confrontation, a gang leader who mobilised the attack was identified and shot in the leg. He was immediately evacuated to a hospital for treatment,” the statement revealed.
Following reinforcement from additional military personnel, security operatives regained control of the area. It was during subsequent operations that the disturbing discovery of a corpse placed beside a coffin was made.
The remains were promptly evacuated to a mortuary by officers of the Nigeria Police Force, working in collaboration with the army.
Security forces have since secured the area and continue to protect critical assets belonging to the company, while investigations into the incident are ongoing.
The 2 Brigade commended residents for their cooperation and urged the public to continue providing timely and actionable intelligence to support efforts in maintaining peace and security across the state.
