Fast-rising Nigerian singer Qing Madi has stirred reactions after opening up about the enormous financial rewards in the music industry, describing it as “not normal” and comparable to “drug money” due to how quickly and massively it comes.
The 19-year-old made the remarks during a recent appearance on the Tea With Tay podcast, where she reflected on her journey, success, and the realities of being a young artist in Nigeria’s booming entertainment scene.
According to Qing Madi, the earnings in the music industry can be staggering when compared to conventional jobs. She explained that while many Nigerians work full-time and earn modest monthly salaries, artists can make life-changing sums from a single performance.
“The average Nigerian works a 9–5 job and earns maybe ₦500,000 monthly, but as an artist, you can do one show and earn up to ₦20 million,” she said, emphasizing the wide gap between traditional employment and entertainment income.

Despite her financial success, Qing Madi noted that she consciously avoids showcasing her wealth on social media. She said she does not want money to become the defining feature of her public identity, stressing that she prefers people to focus on her artistry rather than her earnings.
“I don’t like people looking at me and just seeing money,” she explained, adding that while she is financially comfortable, she values privacy and authenticity over public validation.
The singer also touched on the emotional role music plays in the lives of many Nigerians. She suggested that the country’s strong attachment to music may be linked to limited access to professional mental health support, making music a form of therapy and escape for many listeners.
Her comments have since sparked widespread conversation online, with fans and observers debating the realities of the music business, the disparity in income across professions, and the pressures that come with fame and financial success in the entertainment industry.
