The Minister of Regional Affairs, Uba Maigeri, has dismissed claims that he diverted N16.5 billion earmarked for the reconstruction of the collapsed Namnai Bridge in Taraba State.
The allegations, made by social media user Abdulmumuni Imam, also suggested that the minister was plotting his arrest for criticizing the project.
Speaking to journalists in Jalingo on Friday, Maigeri’s lawyer, Dr. Ibrahim Effiong, described the claims as “unfounded and malicious,” stressing that the minister, a respected lawyer, has done nothing wrong.
Effiong acknowledged Nigerians’ right to free expression but warned that such freedom should not be abused to spread baseless rumors.
He confirmed that the matter is now before the court and urged Imam to substantiate his claims. Effiong also praised the minister for seeking legal redress, calling for greater respect for public officials and responsible use of social media.
“The hands of the law cannot be too short. Where your right starts, it also ends somewhere,” Effiong said, adding that Maigeri’s measured approach reflects a commitment to due process.
