The Nigeria Police Force has dismissed four police officers over their involvement in the killing of seven traders during a violent incident in Lagos.
The officers, who were attached to the Lagos State Police Command, were found guilty of misconduct and misuse of firearms after an internal disciplinary investigation into the deadly shooting.
The tragedy reportedly occurred at a market area in the Owode-Onirin axis of Lagos following a dispute linked to land ownership around the trading community.
Tension had been building between traders operating in the area and individuals claiming control of the land.
According to reports, the officers were allegedly brought to the location by individuals involved in the dispute to enforce control over the property.
However, the situation quickly escalated into chaos when a confrontation broke out between the traders and the armed group accompanying the policemen.

During the clash, gunshots were reportedly fired, leaving seven traders dead while several others sustained injuries.
The incident sparked outrage among residents and traders in the area, who accused the officers of excessive use of force.
Following public condemnation and petitions from victims’ families, the police authorities launched an internal investigation which eventually led to the dismissal of the four officers after they were found culpable.
Police authorities said the decision was part of efforts to enforce discipline within the force and assure the public that officers who violate the law will face consequences.
The dismissed officers are also expected to face prosecution as investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting.
The incident had earlier triggered protests and renewed calls for stronger accountability within Nigeria’s policing system, as families of the victims continue to demand justice for the slain traders.
