The Lagos State Government has launched an investigation into the reported death of a Lagos socialite popularly known as “Elena,” who allegedly died following complications from a Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) procedure at a clinic in the state.
The probe is being carried out by the Health Facilities Monitoring and Accreditation Agency (HEFAMAA) after reports circulating on social media claimed that the woman developed complications during or shortly after the aesthetic surgery.
Confirming the development, the Permanent Secretary of HEFAMAA, Abiola Idowu, said in a statement on Thursday that the agency had commenced a thorough and transparent investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Idowu noted that preliminary findings indicated the clinic where the procedure reportedly took place is registered with HEFAMAA. However, she stressed that registration does not shield any healthcare facility from regulatory scrutiny, especially in matters relating to patient safety.
“As the statutory regulatory body responsible for monitoring, licensing and accrediting healthcare facilities in Lagos State, HEFAMAA ensures that all health institutions comply with established operational standards, professional guidelines and patient safety protocols,” she said.

She further explained that cosmetic and aesthetic surgical procedures in Lagos State are governed by strict regulatory standards.
These include requirements on facility infrastructure, practitioner qualifications, infection prevention and control measures, patient consent procedures, anaesthetic safety and emergency response capacity.
According to her, the agency has begun a comprehensive review of the incident. This includes assessing the clinic’s compliance with regulatory standards, verifying the professional credentials of the medical personnel involved and evaluating the level of care provided to the patient before, during and after the procedure.
Idowu reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to protecting residents’ health and safety through strengthened regulatory oversight, continuous monitoring of healthcare facilities and strict enforcement of healthcare standards.
She also urged members of the public to remain calm and refrain from spreading unverified information that could compromise the integrity of the ongoing investigation.
