
At least 15 people have been confirmed dead following a violent clash between suspected bandits and local vigilantes in parts of Katsina State.
The attack occurred on Tuesday afternoon in Falele village, within Jibia Local Government Area, when heavily armed bandits reportedly penetrated the community through surrounding bush paths and unguarded entry points.
Witnesses said the attackers arrived on motorcycles, firing sporadically to create panic before advancing deeper into the village.
Their incursion triggered a fierce gun battle as local vigilantes and community guards mobilised to repel them.

The confrontation quickly escalated, with both sides exchanging gunfire.
According to the state Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Nasir Mua’zu, the violence also spread to nearby Kadobe village.
He explained that the initial clash involved vigilantes engaging some repentant bandits, leading to casualties.
The situation, however, degenerated into a reprisal attack that claimed more lives.
Security operatives, including personnel from the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services, were swiftly deployed to the affected areas.
With support from local security groups and community leaders, calm has since been restored.
Authorities have urged residents to remain calm and cooperate with ongoing investigations, assuring that efforts are being intensified to prevent further attacks.
The incident underscores the persistent security challenges in northwestern Nigeria, where rural communities continue to face threats from armed groups despite ongoing security interventions.
