A prominent Nigerian lawyer and All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain, Barrister Abdulsalami Ginsau, has reportedly died after becoming trapped in a hotel elevator in Abuja on Tuesday, March 31, 2026, under circumstances that remain unclear.
Eyewitnesses say Ginsau was stuck inside the lift for an extended period. Delayed rescue efforts are believed to have contributed to the tragedy, and he is feared to have suffocated before help arrived.
Ginsau had traveled to Abuja to attend meetings and consultations related to his new role as Kano State APC Assistant Organising Secretary, a position he was elected to during the party’s executive elections held on March 3, 2026, just 28 days before his death.
The exact cause of the elevator malfunction remains uncertain.
Some sources suggest a power outage may have immobilized the lift, while others point to a possible mechanical fault. The identity of the hotel has not been disclosed, raising concerns about transparency and safety standards in public facilities.
The incident has sparked public outrage, with many Nigerians calling for stricter enforcement of safety regulations in hotels, office buildings, and other high-traffic areas.

Questions have been raised about whether routine maintenance checks were carried out and if emergency response protocols were in place.
Reacting to the tragedy, former lawmaker Shehu Sani described the incident as “both tragic and disturbing.”
Ginsau was not only a legal practitioner but also an active APC politician in Kano State. The tragedy highlights ongoing concerns about infrastructure safety and regulatory oversight in Nigeria, particularly in public buildings with high foot traffic.
