Nigerian singer Simi has broken her silence after old tweets of hers resurfaced, sparking widespread criticism on social media.
The backlash follows her outspoken position against rape culture and recent discussions surrounding the Mirabel rape allegation.
Simi explained that the tweets, written when she was 23 and juggling her early music career while helping at her mother’s daycare, were innocent reflections of everyday life rather than anything inappropriate.
She emphasized that her words have been taken out of context to fit false narratives.
“I haven’t been on Twitter today – but someone brought a few of my old tweets to my attention and I cannot address it,” Simi said.
“14 years ago, I was 23, so I was definitely not a child. I’m not here to make excuses because I don’t have anything to make excuses for.
