
Two policemen serving with the Enugu State Police Command were killed on Thursday night when gunmen attacked a checkpoint along Agbani Road in Enugu State.
The officers, who were attached to the Distress Response Squad, were reportedly on routine duty when the assailants suddenly opened fire on them.
During the attack, a police patrol vehicle stationed at the checkpoint was set ablaze.
The injured officers sustained critical gunshot wounds and were immediately rushed to a nearby hospital for urgent medical attention.
However, they were later confirmed dead by medical personnel.
The command’s spokesperson said the attackers fled the scene after an exchange of gunfire with the police team, adding that the assailants were suspected members of a proscribed group and its armed wing.

Following the incident, the Commissioner of Police ordered an intensified manhunt for the perpetrators.
Tactical and intelligence units have been directed to deploy all available resources and actionable intelligence to track down the fleeing suspects and ensure they are arrested and brought to justice.
