Gov Otti: Why Abia Is No Longer Hit by National Grid Collapses

Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has explained why the state no longer suffers power outages caused by repeated collapses of Nigeria’s national electricity grid.

According to the governor, Abia has taken deliberate steps to reduce its dependence on the national grid through investments in renewable and locally generated energy.

He said the state has begun converting organic waste into biogas, which is now used to generate electricity for residents and key sectors of the economy.

Otti disclosed that the initiative has enabled Abia to operate a power system largely managed within the state, shielding it from nationwide blackouts.

He added that agreements reached with the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company have allowed the state to implement its new electricity framework without disruption.

The governor noted that regulatory control over electricity generation, distribution, and transmission has also been transferred to the Abia State Electricity Regulatory Authority, giving the state greater independence in managing its power assets.

He explained that the approach mirrors the successful Aba Power model, which supplies electricity to Aba and surrounding industrial areas, ensuring stability even when the national grid fails.

Otti said recent nationwide grid collapses did not affect Abia, as significant portions of the state’s power infrastructure now operate independently.

He expressed confidence that the ongoing reforms would strengthen energy efficiency, promote sustainable development, and guarantee reliable electricity supply for residents and businesses across the state.
