The Late Actor: Michael Obeten
Tragedy has struck a Good Friday drama rehearsal in Cross River State following the death of an actor, Michael Obeten, after a cannon malfunctioned and hit him during a stage performance practice.
The incident occurred in Ugep, Yakurr Local Government Area, where Obeten well known for previously portraying Jesus Christ in the community’s annual Passion Play was reportedly mentoring younger actors at the time.
According to reports, the accident happened at Station 12 of the rehearsal, where a locally fabricated cannon, commonly referred to as “oginigbo” and used to simulate thunder effects, suddenly malfunctioned.
Eyewitness accounts indicate that the device exploded unexpectedly, sending debris flying. Obeten was struck in the head, sustaining severe injuries.
He was immediately rushed for medical attention and scheduled for emergency surgery but unfortunately succumbed to his injuries.
A statement released by the 2007 Mass Communication Alumni Group of the University of Cross River State, signed by Lesoda-Ada, described the incident as both tragic and preventable.
The group alleged that the device was being handled by unlicensed individuals at the time of the explosion.

They called for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident, urging authorities to ensure accountability and enforce stricter safety regulations at public events.
The group also advocated for a ban on the use of firearms and locally made explosive devices during performances unless operated by certified professionals.
Reacting to the development, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, ASP Sunday Akata, confirmed that the incident had been reported informally but noted that no official complaint had yet been filed with the Yakurr Police Division.
He added that preliminary findings suggest Obeten was buried on April 7, 2026, after he died while receiving treatment at a hospital, believed to be located in Abakaliki.
The tragic loss has sparked renewed concerns over safety standards in public performances, particularly during religious and cultural events involving pyrotechnic effects.
