
The Katsina State Police Command has confirmed that four people lost their lives following a stampede during the distribution of annual Ramadan alms in Kofar Guga Quarters, Katsina.
In a statement released on Sunday, the Police Public Relations Officer, Abubakar Aliyu, said the incident occurred on February 26, 2026, at about 9 p.m.
According to the statement, a distress call was received at the Central Police Station in Katsina reporting that a large crowd had gathered at the residence of philanthropist Alhaji Dahiru Usman Sarki in Kofar Guga Quarters for the annual alms distribution. The gathering reportedly led to a stampede, leaving several people injured.

Police officers were immediately dispatched to the scene, where they assisted in evacuating victims to a nearby hospital for treatment. Authorities confirmed that four of the injured later died from their injuries.
The Commissioner of Police, Bello Shehu, extended condolences to the families of the deceased and wished the injured a speedy recovery. He also ordered a full investigation into the incident and directed that measures be put in place to prevent a recurrence.
The police command urged individuals and organisations planning to distribute alms or host similar public events to notify authorities in advance to enable adequate security arrangements and ensure public safety. Further updates, the command said, will be provided as investigations continue.
