Panic gripped the Electrical Market along Old Onitsha-Nnewi Road on Wednesday morning as a fire broke out, destroying five shops.
Quick thinking by traders and the swift action of a water tanker driver helped contain the blaze and prevented it from spreading further.
The fire reportedly started around 9:30 a.m., shortly after traders resumed business following morning prayers.
Eyewitnesses said the blaze began in a single shop, causing shoppers and traders to scramble for safety. Initial attempts to contact the Nnewi Fire Service were unsuccessful, forcing market occupants to act quickly to control the situation.

Mr. Kingsley Okafor, a trader at the market, said, “The fire started suddenly in one shop. Traders quickly mobilized a tanker lorry driver who responded immediately without negotiating a price.
Together, we managed to put out the fire before the arrival of the State Fire Service.”
The Anambra State Fire Service, led by Mr. Chukwudi Chiketa, later confirmed that five shops, housed in a one-storey building selling electrical appliances, were affected.
Fortunately, no lives were lost, although goods worth millions of naira were destroyed.
Mr. Chiketa stated that the exact cause of the fire is still under investigation, but it is suspected to have been triggered by an electrical spark from a power surge.
Market traders expressed relief that the quick response prevented what could have been a far more devastating disaster.
