The Federal Government has announced a nationwide ban on the use of Naira notes for decorative and celebratory purposes ahead of Valentine’s Day festivities.
The directive, issued through the Central Bank of Nigeria, specifically prohibits practices such as money bouquets, cash towers, money-themed cakes and the spraying of banknotes at parties and events.
According to the apex bank, folding, shaping, stapling or spraying Naira notes amounts to defacement of legal tender and violates Nigeria’s currency laws.
Authorities described the growing trend, especially during weddings, birthdays and Valentine’s celebrations, as disrespectful to the national currency.
“The Naira is a symbol of national pride and sovereignty. It must be handled with dignity,” the bank stated, warning that offenders risk arrest and prosecution.
