A suspected vandal has died after being electrocuted while attempting to tamper with a power substation in Enugu.
The incident occurred at a MainPower Electricity Distribution Limited (MEDL) facility on Independence Avenue in the Independence Layout area. According to the company’s Head of Communications, Emeka Ezeh, the man’s body was discovered early Tuesday morning داخل the premises of the Akonobi 500KVA Distribution Substation.
Preliminary findings suggest the suspect was not acting alone. He and his accomplices had reportedly removed two intermediate cables and were working on a third when electricity supply was suddenly restored, leading to his electrocution. The missing cables indicate that others fled the scene.

He urged residents to remain vigilant and work with the company to prevent vandalism, stressing that community support is essential to tackle the problem. He also expressed hope that the incident would deter others from engaging in similar activities.
Police officers have evacuated the body and deposited it at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital morgue.
Vandalism of power infrastructure remains a major challenge to reliable electricity in Nigeria. In 2025 alone, the Transmission Company of Nigeria recorded 131 cases of such incidents across its network.
