Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has urged the opposition to maintain an unwavering commitment to removing President Bola Tinubu from office ahead of the 2027 general elections.
His remarks come in the wake of an alleged attempt by security agencies to detain him at an airport.
Addressing former Vice President Atiku Abubakar during a recent visit, El-Rufai described the airport incident as “unfortunate, totally unnecessary, and probably criminal,” claiming that the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC) used operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) to detain him without prior notice.
He explained that while the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had invited him for questioning, his lawyer had formally communicated that he was abroad and would appear at a later date. “The ICPC, however, never contacted me before the airport incident,” he said.

El-Rufai accused the government of politicizing security agencies, alleging that the ICPC acted under the orders of the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu. “We have reduced security agencies to arms of a political party and a government that knows it is unelectable and wants to remain in power at all cost,” he added.
The former governor emphasized that the episode has strengthened his resolve to work relentlessly with the opposition, urging vigilance and continuous effort.
“We must not sleep between now and March 2027 until we remove this tyrant from office,” El-Rufai told Atiku.
The incident has sparked debate across political circles, with critics raising concerns over the use of security agencies for alleged political purposes and the potential impact on democratic institutions.
