The Edo State Ministry of Education has strongly condemned the assault of a student at Igbinedion Education Centre in Benin City after a disturbing video of the incident surfaced online.
The video, which went viral on Friday, shows two students taking turns to attack another student who was lying helpless on the floor, sparking widespread public outrage.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Edith Ebomoyi, described the act as unacceptable and contrary to the core values of discipline, respect, and safety expected in schools across the state.
“The Edo State Ministry of Education has received with deep concern the disturbing video circulating on social media showing a student physically assaulting another student at Igbinedion Education Centre, Benin City,” the statement read.
The ministry stressed that acts of violence, bullying, or misconduct have no place in the state’s educational institutions, adding that the safety and well-being of every student remain a top priority of the Edo State Government.
Following the incident, the ministry announced the immediate formation of a five-member investigative committee to thoroughly examine the circumstances surrounding the attack.

The committee has been tasked with identifying all students involved and determining the extent of their responsibility.
According to the ministry, appropriate disciplinary measures will be taken against anyone found culpable in line with the rules guiding student conduct in schools within the state.
The ministry also assured parents, school administrators, and members of the public that justice would be served and that measures would be implemented to prevent similar incidents in the future.
School authorities across the state were further urged to strengthen supervision, guidance, and discipline among students to ensure a safe and conducive learning environment.
Meanwhile, the management of Igbinedion Education Centre has expelled the two students allegedly responsible for the assault following public backlash over the viral video.
The incident reportedly involved two male students attacking their colleague while another student recorded the assault.
The police have also invited the parents of the victim to file a formal complaint as part of the ongoing investigation. Authorities say the next step is to properly identify the victim and commence a full probe into the matter.
