
A Magistrate Court in Ilorin, Kwara State, has ordered the remand of two commercial tricyclists, Mohamud Saad and Sunday Emmanuel, over the alleged assault of a human rights lawyer, Taofiq Olateju, and his wife, Monsurat.
The defendants were arraigned on Tuesday on charges of criminal conspiracy, assault, and causing harm following an altercation linked to road obstruction in the state capital.
According to reports, the incident occurred on Sunday when Olateju and his wife were heading out and encountered a traffic blockage allegedly caused by the tricyclists.
What began as a verbal exchange reportedly escalated into a physical confrontation.
Olateju, recounting the incident, said the attack took place directly opposite his residence. He explained that he had approached the tricyclists politely to clear the road, but the situation quickly turned violent.

He alleged that both he and his wife were assaulted, leaving Monsurat with injuries that required medical attention. He further claimed that the suspects continued to issue threats even after their arrest.
Sources familiar with the case confirmed that Monsurat sustained an injury to her right hand and was subsequently hospitalised.
The prosecution anchored its case on a First Information Report, which detailed how the defendants allegedly acted together to assault the couple after being asked to ease traffic congestion.
The report cited offences punishable under Sections 97, 267, and 244 of the Penal Code Law.
Although the defendants denied the allegations during court proceedings, Magistrate O. M. Adebosin ordered their remand at the Oke-Kura Correctional Facility pending further hearing.
The case has been adjourned for continuation of proceedings.
