
A 30-year-old man, Oforbuike Damian, has been arraigned before a Magistrate’s Court in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, for allegedly killing his mother.
The defendant was brought before the court on a one-count charge of murder.
According to the Police Prosecutor, David Njoku, a Senior State Counsel, the incident occurred on March 19, 2026, at Ohatekwe village in the Ukawu community, Onicha Local Government Area.
Njoku told the court that the defendant allegedly caused the death of his mother, Mrs. Onyema Damian, by stabbing her in the back with a knife.
He added that the offence is punishable under Section 319 of the Criminal Code, Cap 33, Vol. 1, Laws of Ebonyi State, 2009.

While speaking during the proceedings, the defendant reportedly said he could not fully explain what transpired but admitted to the act, stating that it happened after his mother refused to bathe him.
Presiding over the matter, Chief Magistrate Chinedu Agama ordered that the defendant be remanded in a correctional facility, citing lack of jurisdiction to try the case.
The magistrate also directed that the case file and exhibits be forwarded to the Department of Public Prosecutions for legal advice.
The case has been adjourned until April 9, 2026.
