BudgIT, a civic technology organisation focused on promoting transparency, accountability, and citizen engagement in public finance, has condemned the violent attack on its Katsina State officer, Mustapha Sadiq.
In a statement issued on Friday and signed by its Country Director, Vahyala Kwaga, the organisation disclosed that the incident occurred on April 4, 2026.
According to reports, five armed men wielding machetes broke into Sadiq’s residence at night and inflicted severe injuries on him.
The attackers reportedly targeted his head and upper body, leaving him seriously wounded and in urgent need of medical attention. They also attempted to steal his vehicle but were unsuccessful.
Describing the attack as disturbing and unacceptable, BudgIT expressed concern over the severity of the incident, noting that it is yet to confirm whether the assault is connected to Sadiq’s professional duties of tracking public projects and holding the government accountable.
“At this time, we are uncertain if the attack was connected to his civic responsibilities,” the statement noted, while highlighting the risks associated with accountability work in a challenging environment.

The organisation confirmed that it has lodged a formal complaint with the Nigerian Police Force and is engaging relevant security agencies to ensure the perpetrators are identified and brought to justice.
BudgIT also urged the police to conduct a thorough and transparent investigation, including examining possible links between the attack and Sadiq’s work.
“Acts of this nature undermine public confidence and must not be allowed to persist without consequence,” the statement added.
The organisation further called on authorities to take decisive steps to strengthen security and protect citizens, especially those working to promote accountability.
BudgIT extended its sympathy to Sadiq and his family, wishing him a full and speedy recovery.
