The Benue State Police Command has arrested a 20-year-old suspected ammunition courier and recovered 115 rounds of live 7.62mm ammunition during a security operation aimed at curbing the illegal movement of arms in the state.
The arrest was made by police operatives on routine patrol who intercepted two men riding on a motorcycle. According to the command, one of the occupants fled into a nearby bush after noticing the approaching officers, while the second suspect was apprehended.
The arrested suspect, identified as Joro Jarkata, is from Awe Local Government Area of Nasarawa State. A search conducted on him led to the recovery of 115 rounds of live 7.62mm ammunition allegedly concealed in his possession.
Police authorities said the suspect is currently in custody, while the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Makurdi for further investigation.
Investigators are working to determine the source of the ammunition, identify its intended destination, and uncover those behind the illegal consignment. Efforts are also ongoing to track down and arrest the fleeing suspect.

Benue State Commissioner of Police, Cletus Nwadiogbu, commended the officers involved in the operation for their vigilance and swift response, describing the interception as a significant step in preventing the circulation of illegal arms.
He reaffirmed the command’s commitment to tackling the proliferation of illegal weapons and dismantling criminal networks threatening the safety and security of residents across the state.
The police also urged members of the public to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious persons, movements, or activities to the nearest police station to support ongoing efforts to improve security in Benue State.
