Four police officers have been killed following an attack on the Nghanzai Divisional Police Headquarters in Borno State by suspected Boko Haram/ISWAP insurgents.
According to security analyst Zagazola Makama, the attack occurred at approximately 1:00 a.m. on April 4, 2026—correcting earlier reports that suggested it took place at 10:28 p.m. on April 3. He stated that the assailants arrived in large numbers and engaged officers in a prolonged gunfight before eventually overpowering them.
Those confirmed dead include Inspector Samuel Ezekiel of the Nghanzai Division, Inspector Sanusi Mohammed of 58 PMF Lafia who was on special duty, and Police Constables Bitrus Luka and Shaibu Bukar, both members of the Maiduguri crack squad.
The incident highlights the ongoing danger insurgent groups pose to security forces in Borno State and raises fresh concerns about the safety of police facilities in the region.

In a separate development, suspected insurgents also attacked Kwapul community in Chibok Local Government Area. The late-night raid, which extended into the early hours of Sunday, saw attackers burn a church and several homes in what residents described as a coordinated assault on the largely Christian community.
Although no fatalities were reported in that incident, many residents were displaced and left deeply shaken. Locals noted that the attackers operated for hours without resistance, underscoring the continued vulnerability of rural communities despite ongoing counterinsurgency operations.
The timing of the attacks has further heightened concern, as they occurred during the Easter season—a period that has historically seen increased violence targeting Christian communities in Nigeria’s conflict-affected regions.
