Early Thursday morning, suspected arsonists launched a devastating attack on St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Katchuan Iruan, Boki Local Government Area of Cross River State.
According to the state police spokesperson, ASP Sunday Eitokpah, the attackers gained entry by forcing open the church doors, striking around 3 a.m., and leaving a trail of destruction.

The fire destroyed all church records stored in the sacristy, while the priest’s Lexus 350 Jeep and a Toyota Corolla parked within the church premises were also set ablaze.
“No suspect has been identified at this time,” ASP Eitokpah said, adding that efforts are ongoing to determine those responsible.
The scene has been photographed, and the case has been referred to Okunde Police Station for discreet investigation.
This incident reflects a broader pattern of insecurity affecting religious communities across Nigeria. Attacks on places of worship have increased in early 2026, prompting calls from international communities, including the United States, for enhanced security measures.
Police have assured the public that any suspect identified will be disclosed promptly.
