Angela Okorie Detained Following Alleged Cyberbullying of Mercy Johnson

Nollywood actress Angela Okorie has reportedly been detained over allegations of cyberbullying directed at her colleague, Mercy Johnson.

The arrest was carried out by operatives of the Nigeria Police Force Cybercrime Center, Abuja, at Okorie’s Lagos residence on Tuesday, January 27, 2026.

Sources say Okorie spent the night at Yaba’s Panti Police Station before being flown to Abuja early Wednesday morning to face court proceedings in connection with the matter.

Journalist and BON Awards founder, Seun Oloketuyi, shared the update on social media, highlighting that the arrest was linked to ongoing complaints regarding online harassment and defamation targeting Mercy Johnson and her family.

The development comes a week after Mercy Johnson publicly warned that any acts of cyberbullying or defamation directed at her or her family “would not be business as usual” in 2026.

The warning appeared to signal a more assertive approach by the actress against online harassment, which has increasingly become a concern in the entertainment industry.

While details of the alleged cyberbullying remain largely undisclosed, reports suggest the matter involves online posts and messages deemed threatening or harmful to Mercy Johnson’s reputation.

Legal experts note that Nigeria’s cybercrime laws allow for police intervention when such claims are substantiated, especially when reputations are at stake.

The police are reportedly conducting further investigations into the matter, and Angela Okorie is expected to appear before a court in Abuja for hearing of the charges.

The incident has sparked reactions across social media, with fans and industry observers expressing varying opinions on the case and the broader issue of cyberbullying in Nollywood.

As the legal proceedings unfold, both the entertainment community and the public await clarification on the specifics of the allegations, which could set a precedent for how online harassment cases involving celebrities are handled in Nigeria.
