
The Akran of Badagry Kingdom, Oba Wheno Menu-Toyi, has passed away at the age of 89 following a brief illness.
The late monarch, who ruled Badagry for nearly 49 years, was a respected figure in the Lagos State Council of Obas and Chiefs and a devoted custodian of his community’s traditions and culture.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, in a statement released by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Gboyega Akosile, described Oba Menu-Toyi’s death as a great loss to Badagry, Lagos State, and Nigeria.
The governor praised the monarch for his wisdom, commitment to cultural preservation, and efforts to promote the development of Badagry.

“Oba Akran rendered selfless service to his people, leaving behind a legacy of unity, tradition, and progress. He promoted Badagry’s historical sites and cultural festivals nationally and internationally, fostering tourism and cultural exchange,” the statement said.
Oba Menu-Toyi ascended the throne of his forefathers on April 23, 1977, and served as the Permanent Vice-Chairman of the Lagos State Council of Obas and Chiefs until his death.
He was known for uniting diverse interests within his kingdom and using his position to attract development to the ancient town.
Governor Sanwo-Olu extended condolences to the royal family, the people of Badagry, and all associates of the late monarch, urging them to honor his enduring legacy.
Oba Wheno Menu-Toyi will be remembered as a stabilizing force, a champion of culture, and a leader whose contributions continue to shape the Badagry Kingdom.
