Senate President Godswill Akpabio is reportedly receiving medical treatment in London after collapsing earlier this month. So

urces within the National Assembly told SaharaReporters that Akpabio collapsed on the 10th and was immediately flown to the United Kingdom aboard a private jet allegedly provided by billionaire businessman Aliko Dangote. He is said to be currently hospitalised and under medical care in London.

Sources further revealed that the development has kept the Senate President away from his official responsibilities, including the Medium Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF) and Fiscal Strategy Paper (FSP) interactive session held on Wednesday.

SaharaReporters also gathered that Akpabio’s condition is considered serious, necessitating prolonged medical treatment overseas. One of the sources disclosed that this is the second time he has been rushed to London for treatment, sparking renewed concerns over his health and ability to continue leading the upper legislative chamber.

Concern has continued to mount over the health of Senate President Godswill Akpabio, as reports indicate that several senators travelled to London to check on him during his hospitalisation. Sources also revealed that medical experts attending to Akpabio have advised him to drastically reduce his workload. According to briefings received by SaharaReporters, doctors have reportedly recommended that he step down from his Senate duties to properly attend to his health.

Akpabio’s absence was particularly noticeable at the flag-off of the Medium-Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF) and Fiscal Strategy Paper (FSP) interactive session, a critical engagement between the executive and legislature that shapes Nigeria’s medium-term fiscal and economic plans.

Akpabio “has already missed today’s Medium Term Expenditure Framework presentation.” In his absence, Senator Onyekachi Nwaebonyi represented the Senate President at the event, highlighting Akpabio’s inability to attend in person.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio was last seen in public on December 9, when he presided over the Nigerian Senate’s approval of President Bola Tinubu’s request to send troops to the Republic of Benin. The deployment is intended to support efforts to restore peace following an attempted coup.

During the plenary session, Akpabio announced the Senate’s unanimous approval, following deliberations in the Committee of the Whole under Section 5, Part II of the Constitution. He emphasized the importance of the decision, noting that unrest in a neighbouring country could pose risks to stability across West Africa.

Akpabio emphasized that “an injury to one is an injury to all,” highlighting Nigeria’s responsibility to assist its ECOWAS partners in preserving regional stability.
