Fresh tension has gripped Rivers State as the House of Assembly officially kicked off impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu.
In a dramatic plenary session, 26 lawmakers endorsed allegations of gross misconduct, setting the stage for another fierce political showdown in the oil-rich state.
The Assembly accused Fubara of constitutional breaches, including the demolition of the Assembly complex, extra-budgetary spending, withholding statutory funds, and defying a Supreme Court ruling on legislative financial autonomy.

Similar accusations were also levelled against his deputy, ranging from reckless public spending to obstructing the Assembly’s constitutional duties.
This move marks a renewed attempt to remove the governor barely months after a fragile political truce, following his defection from the PDP to the APC.
With memories of last year’s emergency rule still fresh, all eyes are now on Rivers as the impeachment drama threatens to reopen old wounds—and reshape the state’s political future.
