The Oyo State Police Command has apprehended a man identified as Olaitan Oloyede for allegedly defiling a minor who is the child of his neighbour in the Oke-Alaro area of Ibadan.
According to a statement released on Saturday night by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Ayanlade Olayinka, the incident was reported to have taken place in October.
Olayinka noted that the suspect is currently in police custody while investigations are ongoing, and the case will be transferred to the appropriate department for legal action.
The statement noted that investigations revealed the matter came to light after an eight-year-old girl informed her father that she had been experiencing pain in her private area and alleged that she had been sexually abused by their 27-year-old neighbour, identified as Olaitan Oloyede, sometime in October 2025.
Upon receiving the report, the command said officers of the Oke-Alaro Police Division immediately opened an investigation, which subsequently led to the arrest of the suspect.
The statement added that detectives from the Oke-Alaro Division, led by the Divisional Police Officer, escorted the child to a medical facility for examination, treatment and rehabilitation, where she is currently receiving appropriate care and support.
It further disclosed that the suspect has since been apprehended and placed in lawful custody. According to the command, he is cooperating with investigators as the police continue their ongoing inquiries into the case.
The statement further noted that the state Commissioner of Police, Femi Haruna, condemned the incident in strong terms and applauded the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, for his leadership in enhancing intelligence-driven policing and improving the protection of vulnerable groups.
“CP Haruna has directed that the case be transferred to the State CID Gender Desk for discreet investigation to ensure a thorough and professional handling of the matter,” the statement said.
The command reiterated its zero tolerance for sexual and gender-based violence, particularly against children, and urged parents, guardians and members of the public to promptly report any suspected abuse to the nearest police station.
It also reaffirmed its commitment to ridding Oyo State of violent crimes and ensuring justice for all victims.
The arrest comes less than seven days after the command disclosed the arrest of another man in connection with a similar offence involving a 17-year-old girl.
The police described the development as “another operational success” in their efforts to protect residents of the state
