New Year’s Eve Inferno Destroys 24 Electronics Shops in Lagos

A midnight fire on Wednesday ravaged several shops in a storey-building complex beside the Ikotun Roundabout in Lagos State, destroying electronics and other goods worth millions of naira.

The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Thursday by its Controller General, Margret Adeseye. She said the agency received the distress call at about 12:22 a.m., and firefighters arrived at the scene 10 minutes later.

According to the statement, the blaze affected a shopping complex consisting of 24 shops of various sizes, all of which suffered severe damage. Firefighting units from Enigbo, Isolo, and Ijegun were deployed to battle the inferno using Class A foam and water tenders.

The outbreak occurred barely 72 hours after a similar fire in incident at the Arena Market in the Bolade area of Oshodi, even as emergency responders were still managing the aftermath of another fire at the Great Nigeria Insurance Plaza on December 24.

A police team from the Ikotun Division was also present to maintain order during the operation.
The fire was eventually brought under control, and no casualties were recorded. Preliminary findings by the fire service linked the incident to an electrical surge reportedly caused by negligence.
