Nigerian music star Tiwa Savage became visibly emotional while performing her hit song Somebody’s Son in Benin Republic on Saturday.

The moment took place at the “We Love Ya” Festival in Cotonou, where the singer struggled to hold back tears during her rendition of the song. A video from the performance, now making the rounds on social media, shows Tiwa wiping her eyes and briefly pausing as the crowd loudly sang along, offering vocal support.

Somebody’s Son, featuring American R&B star Brandy, was released on August 20, 2021, as part of Tiwa Savage’s EP Water & Garri. Blending Afrobeats with soulful R&B, the song reflects themes of patience, hope, and belief in finding a virtuous, lasting love after heartbreak.

Speaking in October 2021, the former Mavin Records artist revealed that she and Brandy wrote the song to evoke strong emotions, saying it was meant to make “women either dance or cry.” However, in July 2022, Tiwa later explained that the song held a deeper spiritual meaning for her, stating that it was inspired by Jesus Christ rather than romantic love.

“When I wrote Somebody’s Son, I wasn’t thinking about a relationship. I was thinking about Jesus Christ because he is the real somebody’s son,” she said during a concert.

Tiwa Savage, now 45, was previously married to her former manager, Tunji “Tee Billz” Balogun. The marriage, which began in 2013, ended in a highly publicised divorce in 2018. She has not remarried since.
