Residents of Mwar community in Chakfem Chiefdom, Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State, have accused soldiers at a nearby checkpoint of ignoring their calls for help during a recent attack by suspected Fulani militias.
The community was attacked in the early hours of Sunday, November 30, 2025, resulting in three deaths, two injuries, and the looting of food supplies and livestock.
Ayuba Yunana, a youth leader in Mwar, said that when the gunmen stormed the village and began shooting, some residents ran to a military checkpoint just a few hundred meters away to request assistance. “There were about 10 soldiers at the checkpoint, and our people pleaded with them to come and assist us, as the bandits had overpowered the local vigilantes,” Yunana said. “They refused, saying it was not their line of duty.”
Another community youth, Paul Daluk, confirmed Yunana’s account, adding that villagers approached the soldiers twice during the attack, but the troops still refused to intervene. “After the first refusal, some elders went to plead with them, but nothing changed. The soldiers only arrived the following morning, long after the attackers had left,” Daluk said.
Residents have expressed shock and frustration over the soldiers’ inaction despite being armed and stationed close to the village during the attack.
