Families of suspected illegal miners who died while in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Niger State have appealed to authorities to release the remains of their loved ones for burial.
The relatives said keeping the bodies in the mortuary has deepened their grief, stressing that they are more concerned about recovering the remains than receiving compensation.
One relative, identified as Hauwa Umar, told Zarar Bunu TV that the family only wants to take their loved one home and give him a proper burial.
Another relative, Ummi Halli, also called for the immediate release of her grandson’s remains, saying the deceased had been trying to earn a living.

Meanwhile, Malam Abdullahi, a security guard at an A.A. Rano filling station along Mai Tumbi, recounted how he repeatedly took food to his son while he was in NSCDC custody, only to later discover that he had died.
“I lost a breadwinner,” Abdullahi said, describing the discovery as devastating.
The deaths have continued to generate public concern, with calls for authorities to establish what happened to the miners and provide answers to their grieving families.
