Colombia booked their place in the Round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating Ghana 1-0 in a closely contested knockout match on Friday.
The South Americans dominated possession and created the better chances throughout the encounter, with Jhon Arias scoring the decisive goal in the 14th minute. The winger finished calmly from close range after substitute Luis Suárez delivered a well-worked cross following a determined run down the right flank.
Both teams suffered early injury setbacks, forcing changes before the midway point of the first half. Despite the disruptions, Colombia remained in control, while Ghana struggled to threaten the opposition goal and failed to register a single shot on target.
Colombia continued to press for a second goal after the break, but poor finishing prevented them from extending their lead. Luis Díaz came closest on several occasions, with one effort ruled out for offside and another denied by Ghana goalkeeper Lawrence Ati Zigi, who produced several important saves to keep his side in the contest.

Although Ghana improved defensively in the second half, they were unable to create meaningful attacking opportunities as Colombia comfortably protected their narrow advantage until the final whistle.
Luis Díaz was named Man of the Match and admitted afterwards that Colombia must improve their finishing, while expressing confidence that the team is growing stronger with each performance.
The victory sends Colombia into the Round of 16, where they will face Switzerland for a place in the quarter-finals, while Ghana’s 2026 World Cup journey comes to an end.
