France and Norway are set for one of the standout fixtures of the 2026 FIFA World Cup group stage as two of the tournament’s most prolific forwards, Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland, prepare to battle for top spot in Group I.
Both teams have already secured qualification for the knockout rounds after winning their opening two matches, but Friday’s encounter will determine which side finishes first in the group. France holds a slight edge due to a superior goal difference and only requires a draw to claim the top position.
Mbappe has been in outstanding form for France, scoring four goals in victories over Senegal and Iraq. Haaland has matched that tally with four goals for Norway, helping his country defeat Iraq 4-1 before edging Senegal 3-2. The pair trail only Lionel Messi, who leads the tournament’s Golden Boot race with five goals.
Norway heads into the match full of confidence after winning 12 consecutive competitive games. However, Haaland has played down suggestions that his side is among the favourites to lift the World Cup, insisting France remains one of the strongest teams in the competition. He also expressed pride in Norway’s progress, describing the current squad as one making history.

France’s preparations have been affected by the temporary absence of head coach Didier Deschamps, who left the team’s camp following the death of his mother. Assistant coach Guy Stephan will oversee the team until Deschamps returns, saying the focus is on maintaining stability during a difficult period.
Finishing second in the group could hand France a significantly tougher route through the knockout stages, with potential clashes against Ivory Coast, Brazil, England and Argentina before the final.
Elsewhere on Friday, Spain will face Uruguay in Group H, aiming to secure first place with at least a draw. Cape Verde will attempt to continue its impressive campaign against Saudi Arabia.
In Group G, Egypt takes on Iran in Seattle in a match that has attracted attention because it coincides with city-wide Pride celebrations, prompting objections from officials of both countries. Belgium will also face New Zealand as they seek to secure a place in the knockout stage.
