A senior officer of the Nigeria Customs Service, Mr Lumi Elisha Gwamis, has died in Boi District, Bogoro Local Government Area of Bauchi State, throwing residents and his family into mourning. The 44-year-old officer was the eldest son of former Bogoro LGA chairman, Hon. Elisha Tula Gwamis.
Reports within the community alleged that Gwamis had been battling depression and anxiety before his death, with some residents suggesting he died by suicide. However, officials have not confirmed the cause of death.
The officer’s father described the incident as shocking and painful during a condolence visit on Monday. He said his son appeared healthy and that no one in the family was aware of what he was about to do until they received the news.

The Nigeria Customs Service, Federal Operations Unit Zone D in Bauchi, has dismissed reports of suicide. Public Relations Officer Umar Abdullahi said the service had not received any information indicating the officer took his own life.
According to him, Gwamis had only reported to the unit after a recent transfer from Tin Can Island Port and was granted annual leave due to illness. Abdullahi stated that the father informed the command that the officer was sick and later called to report his death. He added that the command could not speculate on unverified claims.
Residents and sympathisers across Bogoro LGA have continued to express grief over the incident, describing it as a great loss to the community. The deceased is scheduled to be buried on Wednesday, June 10, following a funeral service in Boi. He is survived by his father, mother Mrs Saratu Elisha Gwamis, and several siblings.
The circumstances surrounding Mr Gwamis’ death remain unclear at the time of filing this report as investigations are yet to be concluded.
