Operatives of the Nigeria Police Force have successfully foiled a deadly bomb plot at the Ikot Ekpene Correctional Centre in Akwa Ibom State, preventing what could have resulted in massive destruction and loss of lives.
The operation, which took place on April 28, 2026, followed credible intelligence received by authorities at the custodial facility, alerting them to a possible security breach involving explosive devices.
Acting swiftly on the information, the Commissioner of Police, Baba Azare, ordered the immediate deployment of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Unit from Uyo, alongside other tactical teams, to secure the facility and neutralize any threats.
A thorough search and sweep operation carried out by the security team led to the recovery of high-grade explosive materials and suspicious tools.
Items recovered included two 90mm high explosive rounds, a burning fuse, iron chisels, a conduit pipe, a screwdriver, and a pair of pincers materials believed to have been intended for assembling or detonating an explosive device.
Police spokesperson, Timfon John, confirmed that the EOD experts successfully rendered the explosives safe, effectively neutralizing the threat before it could escalate.
