The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has clarified why the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) was postponed from its initial schedule.
The tournament, originally slated to kick off on March 17, 2026, has now been shifted to July 25 – August 16.
Speaking on SuperSport’s Soccer Africa, CAF’s acting Secretary-General, Samson Adamu, said the decision was not taken lightly but was necessary to ensure optimal conditions for a successful competition.
According to him, unforeseen circumstances made it difficult to guarantee the quality and standard expected of the tournament at the earlier date.

He also emphasized that after the successful staging of the men’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), it was important to ensure the women’s edition is delivered in equally perfect conditions.
“The reason we delayed the WAFCON was that there were circumstances beyond us at the time that wouldn’t permit us to have the best competition possible,” Adamu said.
He added that CAF remains committed to improving the women’s game and ensuring the tournament meets global standards in organization and competitiveness.
The Women’s Africa Cup of Nations is one of the continent’s most prestigious women’s football competitions, showcasing top national teams across Africa.
