
The Oyo State Police Command has arrested a 23-year-old man, Sodiq Kayode Akorede, over the alleged killing of a six-year-old girl, Mutiyatu Sunday, in Ibadan, the state capital.
The tragic incident occurred on April 11, 2026, in Adigun Village, located in the Olorunda Ogunsola area of Ibadan.
In a statement released on Sunday, the Police Public Relations Officer, Olayinka Ayanlade, disclosed that the command received intelligence reports linking the suspect to the crime.
According to him, police operatives were immediately deployed to the scene following reports that the suspect was found in possession of parts of the victim’s body.
“Officers swiftly mobilised to the location and, despite resistance from an irate mob, acted with professionalism to rescue and arrest the suspect while securing critical evidence,” Ayanlade stated.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspect allegedly carried out the act, and the victim was later recovered during the operation. The police further revealed that the suspect confessed during interrogation.

Ayanlade also confirmed that the suspect sustained injuries during an attempted mob attack and is currently receiving medical attention.
He will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department upon recovery for further investigation and prosecution.
Reacting to the development, the Commissioner of Police, Abimbola Olugbenga, condemned acts of jungle justice, warning that such actions could obstruct proper investigation and the course of justice.
“The Command strongly advises against taking the law into one’s hands, as it may hinder due process and compromise justice,” the statement read.
The police assured residents that justice would be served and urged the public to remain law-abiding while continuing to report suspicious activities to security agencies.
