The management of Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo, has confirmed the death of a 300-level student, Azeezat Abdul-Rasheed, who was fatally injured in a hit-and-run accident in the Igando area of Lagos.
The tragic incident occurred on Saturday evening at about 7 p.m., when the student was reportedly knocked down by a fleeing driver. She later succumbed to her injuries in the hospital.
Following the incident, the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Joint Campus Council (JCC), Lagos State, expressed deep sorrow and called for accountability.
In a statement jointly signed by NANS JCC Lagos Chairman, Ridwan Ajayi; Secretary, Kareem Mumini; and Public Relations Officer, Aloba Ahmod, the association described the death as heartbreaking and reflective of the risks faced by students.
“The Nigerian student populace demands more than mere custody we demand transparent, swift, and uncompromised justice,” the statement read.
While confirming the arrest of the driver, NANS emphasized that apprehending the suspect alone is not enough.
The group urged law enforcement authorities to ensure a thorough investigation and provide timely updates on the case, including details of those involved and prosecution steps.

The student body also cautioned against politicising the tragedy, stressing that the loss of a student should not be exploited for personal or political interests.
NANS assured students that it would continue to monitor the case and engage relevant authorities until justice is fully served.
Meanwhile, LASU management, in an official statement shared via its X (formerly Twitter) handle, urged students to remain calm and avoid taking the law into their own hands.
“The driver has been arrested and will be charged to court. Management is closely monitoring proceedings to ensure justice is served,” the statement noted.
The university also extended condolences to the bereaved family, friends, and the entire student community, praying for the repose of the deceased.
This incident comes months after a similar tragedy in November, where three students of Lagos State University of Science and Technology lost their lives in a road accident near Ikorodu, raising renewed concerns about road safety and student vulnerability in Lagos State.
