Onyeka Breaks Two-Year Goal Drought in Coventry’s Dramatic Championship Victory
Nigeria international Frank Onyeka ended his two-year goal drought in style, scoring a stunning opener as Coventry City secured a thrilling 3-2 win over Derby County in the Championship on Friday night.
Onyeka struck in the 12th minute, connecting with a pass inside the box before unleashing a first-time effort that sailed over the goalkeeper into the far top corner, igniting celebrations at the CBS Arena.
The goal marked his first at club level since March 2024, when he found the net for Brentford against Sheffield United in the Premier League. It was also his maiden goal for Coventry City.
Derby County responded strongly before halftime, with Ben Brereton Diaz netting twice to overturn the early deficit and put the visitors ahead.
However, Coventry rallied in the second half, showing resilience to reclaim control and secure all three points in a pulsating encounter.
Onyeka’s strike brought an end to a 55-match goal drought across his club career, spanning his time at Brentford, Augsburg, and Coventry, as well as competitions including the Premier League, Bundesliga, FA Cup, Carabao Cup, DFB Pokal, and the Championship.
Despite his limited goal contributions at club level, Onyeka has remained effective for Nigeria, scoring in key fixtures, including a World Cup qualifying clash against Benin in October 2025 and a playoff draw against DR Congo in November.
