An Akwa Ibom State High Court sitting in Ikot Ekpene has sentenced Ofonime Augustine Etim, a barber from Abama village, Abak Local Government Area, to 14 years imprisonment for defiling a 12-year-old girl.
The offence occurred on May 10, 2023, in Ikot Obong Otoro, when the victim was reportedly abducted and taken to a residence where the crime was committed.
The girl was missing for several days before being discovered with injuries and blood-stained clothing, prompting medical attention.
During the trial, prosecutors presented key evidence, including testimonies from the Investigating Police Officer, a consultant gynecologist, and the victim’s elder sister.

The gynecologist confirmed injuries consistent with sexual assault, including a 2cm vaginal wall laceration and multiple bruises.
The presiding judge, Justice Augustine D. Odokwo, ruled that the prosecution had proven its case beyond reasonable doubt.
He dismissed the defendant’s claims of false accusation, describing them as unsubstantiated.
Justice Odokwo emphasized that the offence was grave and stressed the importance of protecting children and deterring similar crimes.
“The law is designed not only to punish but to deter others from such acts. Children must be protected,” he stated.
The court ordered that Etim serve 14 years in prison without the option of a fine, with the period he has already spent in custody since May 13, 2023, deducted from his sentence.
His name will also be entered into the State Sex Offenders Register, while all exhibits from the trial will remain in court custody pending appeal.
