Police officers in Abuja on Monday marked this year’s National Police Day with a sanitation exercise aimed at strengthening ties with residents.
The outreach, led by the FCT Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Sanusi, saw officers cleaning the busy Area One Motor Park and nearby streets.
They swept roads, cleared refuse, and interacted freely with members of the public.
In a show of friendliness, some officers went beyond sanitation, helping residents with daily chores like washing clothes.
The police commissioner also joined in by briefly using a trader’s sewing machine, drawing cheers and applause from onlookers.

Sanusi explained that the initiative was part of programmes approved by the Inspector-General of Police to promote closer relationships between the police and civilians through community engagement.
According to him, activities lined up for the celebration include environmental sanitation and medical outreach, all designed to show that the police are part of the community and committed to serving the people better.
He noted that the positive reaction from residents reflects growing trust and acceptance of the police, adding that officers would continue to improve their service delivery.
Residents welcomed the initiative, with one community member praising the effort as a step in the right direction. He expressed hope that such gestures would help build stronger cooperation between citizens and security agencies in tackling crime.
The sanitation exercise is one of several activities organised nationwide to commemorate the day, with a focus on improving police-public relations and fostering mutual trust.
