The Students’ Union Government of Olabisi Onabanjo University has accused officers of the Nigerian Police Force of assault and excessive use of force, including alleged gunfire, during a protest at the Oru-Ijebu Police Division in Ogun State.
The incident, which has sparked controversy, reportedly began after claims surfaced that some students were arrested under unclear circumstances.
In response, the union’s Legal Director visited the police station to verify the situation and ensure due process.
According to a statement jointly signed by the SUG President, Kehinde Bamigbose, and General Secretary, Olajire Emmanuel, the Legal Director was allegedly subjected to physical assault while carrying out his duties.
The union claimed he was manhandled, choked, and treated in a degrading manner by officers at the station. Another student present was also reportedly slapped during the encounter.
Tensions escalated when the SUG President and other student leaders arrived at the station in an attempt to peacefully resolve the situation.
The union alleged that instead of engaging constructively, police officers responded with force.

The students’ body further claimed that officers opened fire on unarmed protesters, resulting in injuries. One student was reportedly shot in the hand, while several others were said to have been assaulted and arrested.
The incident allegedly caused panic in the area, with bystanders also affected by the chaos.
Describing the development as a gross abuse of power, the union condemned the actions of the police, stating that such conduct violates human rights, professional ethics, and the rule of law.
The SUG has issued several demands, including an immediate and transparent investigation into the incident, prosecution of officers involved, medical care and compensation for injured students, and the unconditional release of any detained individuals.
Meanwhile, the Ogun State Police Command has denied the allegations. In an earlier statement, the command’s spokesperson, Oluseyi Babaseyi, maintained that no student was detained following the confrontation at the Oru-Ijebu division.
With conflicting accounts from both parties, the situation continues to raise concerns over police conduct and student safety, as calls for accountability grow louder.
