The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) in Kwara State on Friday commemorated the 2026 International Women’s Day with an event held at the female wing of the old Ilorin Custodial Centre, Okekura, Ilorin.
The programme was organised to celebrate and encourage female inmates while promoting awareness on their rights, dignity, and opportunities for personal growth within the correctional system.
Speaking at the event, the guest speaker, Mrs. Funke Balogun, emphasised the importance of observing International Women’s Day within custodial facilities.
According to her, such initiatives help promote the dignity, wellbeing, and empowerment of female inmates.
She explained that the programme also provides opportunities for counselling, encouragement, and the development of positive values that support rehabilitation and successful reintegration into society.

Balogun further noted that the celebration helps raise awareness about the rights and welfare of women, while encouraging inmates to participate in skill acquisition and personal development programmes available within the custodial centre.
In his remarks, the Officer-in-Charge of the centre, Assistant Controller of Corrections Omole Olumuyiwa, commended the guest speaker, participants, and the leadership of the Kwara State Command for their continued support for the initiative.
He reiterated the commitment of the custodial centre to the core mandate of the Nigerian Correctional Service, which includes safe custody, humane treatment, rehabilitation, and the successful reintegration of inmates into society.
Also speaking, the Kwara State Controller of Corrections, Tolorunshagba Emmanuel, said the celebration of International Women’s Day serves as a reminder of the importance of gender equality, respect for human dignity, and the need to support women in all circumstances.
